Last night I saw an owl chasing something and there were noises I’d never heard before. I spent some time today browsing a library of barred owl noises and none of them were this (although, side note, there are some cool barred owl noises!). Finally it occurred to me to try searching for videos of barred owls in conflict with other birds and the second video was the right noise! So this isn’t a barred owl at all… It’s apparently a distressed Cooper’s hawk being told to remove itself from the area. There’s a tiny bit of the chase on this video but it’s mostly for audio.
